PTC06 V3.0 "No ctrl infr" issue

by Tom_Br on Wed Jan 08, 2020 12:19 pm

Hello,
I've been working on the PTC06 V3.0 camera for Arduino for a few days, and am having issues with making it work correctly.
I started off by following the "TTL Serial Camera" tutorial, using the ComTool software provided, and the connection between the PC and the camera (via the Arduino) has always been dodgy (When hitting "Stop Fbuff", alert message "Cmd time out" appears almost 9 times out of 10). I managed to take a picture once before it disconnected (so the camera seems to work).

I then downloaded the datasheet for the camera and tried communicating with it through Serial port directly (without using an Arduino), and sending the initial operation processes (reset/resolution/compressibility commands), the camera sends the bytes it should send (76 00 26 00/76 00 31 00 00) but immediately after, sends the following message :

VC0703 1.00
No ctrl infr
OV7720
525
Init end

I have looked out through various forums to try and find the meaning/correction for this message, but haven't had any luck, maybe someone here has had the same issue, and can help guide me into correcting it? Hopefully I can get into the image capture process some time soon.

Let's start by checking the hardware setup. Can you post a photo showing how you have everything wired together.

Hi,
Here is a picture of the hardware setup I used to read the communication data sent through Serial port.
the TX and RX pins have a 3.3V level, and are connected to a Serial to USB port and I used an external 5V DC power input for the camera.

Here is the Datasheet I used for the camera https://www.mouser.com/datasheet/2/737/ ... 217461.pdf as the one on the Adafruit website for this camera links to a PTC08 serial camera.

Thanks for your support.

Have you tried running CommTool with that setup? It sounds like you only tried that using the Arduino bridge setup. Using your serial-to-USB adapter, can you get some basic things to work in CommTool? Like the version query:

I had tried it with ComTool yes, and I just tried again today, but I just get a "Cmd time out" message after a 3 second wait.

Any other advice?

Oops. Sorry for slipping on getting back.

Let's double check your soldering. Can you post a better photo of the solder job here:
pixels.fill(val)

Did you try swapping TX/RX wires? Per your labeling it looks correct TX to RX and vice versa. But might still be backwards? Easy enough to try.

What is the USB to serial chip being used?

What is the current rating the 5V supply you are using?

No problem!

Here is a picture of the soldering, I also tried swapping TX and RX wires, and in one situation the camera does communicate (sending the messages mentioned above), and in the other it doesn't, so I doubt that's the issue.

I'm using this device for the communication: https://www.robot-electronics.co.uk/htm ... s_tech.htm

The current value is 2A for the 5V supply.

Try reflowing those solder connections a bit. Some of them looks potentially cold soldered and not wetted out onto the pads enough:

Tried that, and I still get the same error messages.

tom, are you planning on using this with a computer or microcontroller in the end?

Hi,
I want to use it on a computer for some image detection (shapes) at first.
Maybe later, I will use it with a controller for other projects.

could you try it directly with the arduino? the 'computer' software that is included with these cameras is not so great, perhaps getting the images via the arduino would work more reliably?

Hello,
Trying to connect via Arduino doesn't work either, I get a "Cmd Time Out" error message when I try to stop Fbuff.

ok lets try replacing it - maybe that will help
