Gemma Not Able To Upload

by sparky on Thu Jan 12, 2017 12:20 pm

Hi,
Using a black Gemma on a 2011 MacBook Pro with Arduino IDE 1.6.5. I have followed the tutorial https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing-gemma/introduction and installed Adafruit boards twice.

Selecting Adafruit Gemma 8MHZ as my board and USBtinyISP as programmer. Pressing reset button and seeing red light pulse then trying to upload program but keep getting errors. I have also unplugged Gemma and restarted the Arduino IDE several times but still get errors.

Options for selecting a port are:
dev/cu.Bluetooth-Modem
dev/cu.Bluetooth-Icoming-Port

Should I see a device to select like you would with an Arduino Uno or does this not mater with Gemma as there is no serial?

avrdude: error: usbtiny_transmit: Broken pipe
avrdude: error: usbtiny_send: Input/output error (expected 64, got -5)

avrdude: error: usbtiny_receive: Broken pipe (expected 4, got -32)

avrdude: error: usbtiny_receive: Input/output error (expected 4, got -5)

avrdude: error: usbtiny_receive: Input/output error (expected 4, got -5)
avrdude: verification error, first mismatch at byte 0x0000
0x00 != 0x1d
avrdude: verification error; content mismatch

I tried using a USB hub between the Mac and Gemma but still get the above errors.

What am I missing?
Thank you.

I have the same problem with 2 Adafruit Gemma and 1 Trinket 5v. Green LED is on. Red LED is on when I pressed reset button.

I'm using
MacOS Sierra
Arduino 1.8.1
Tools: Adafruit Gemma 8MHz /Adafruit Trinket 16MHz
Programmer: USBtinyISP

I tried to upload the "Blink" program and here is the error I got:

avrdude: error: usbtiny_transmit: Broken pipe
avrdude: initialization failed, rc=-1
Double check connections and try again, or use -F to override
this check.

avrdude: error: usbtiny_transmit: Broken pipe
avrdude: error: usbtiny_transmit: Broken pipe

Thanks.

I found the solution. The moment you press "reset" button, you have to upload the sketch while the red LED is still blinking.

Thanks. Yes I am pushing reset and then immediately pushing upload.
What port are you selecting or does it not matter?

Finally seem to have it working. Used different computer(iMac) and downgraded to Arduino/Adafruit version 1.0.5 and now able to upload blink sketch. Yay!
