I have a uno and got a avrdude: stk500_recv () : programmer is not responding. Error message. I used a photoresistor. Temperature sensor. Servo motor and a 7.2v battery bank 6 batteries 1.2v each connected to the barrel jack.
Servo connected to pin 9
And the power connected to Vin
Temp sensor to pim A1
Power connected to 3.3v and to Aref
See picture. Ignore light sensor and yellow jump wire
Light sensor to pin A0
Power to 5v pin
Ive done a loop back test with and without chip. Both passed. Ive had it happen to me before but it went away the next time i uploaded the code (different project ). And i cant smell anything weird. Hope someone can help

A few things to try:
Use a different USB cable and/or USB port on your computer. If it used to work, you may have a marginal cable.
Try disconnecting any attached circuitry. From your diagram, I don't see any problems, but you could have crossed wires or a bad breadboard somewhere.
