Trinket Burnout -Neo Pixel Project

Post by dehernandez86 »

Hello,

Yesterday I plugged my Mini Trinket into my computer via USB. I had attached 1 loose NeoPixel to it and was trying to run the FlashLED library. After a few seconds the trinket was not responding to the Arduino IDE and a small bit a smoke came out of it. After further inspection, a piece on the trinket board seemed to have burnt out.I am not sure what happened or if this was a defect. I followed instructions on the Learn section of your page. Can I get a replacement and some advice here; not really sure what went wrong.

I connected the LED according to the goggle tutorial. Below are the details of my purchase on February 9th with the items in question. The order number is there as well. I Have also attached pictures. The only items used where the Trinket and 1 NeoPixel

Thank you

Order Confirmation No: 1675695-8914766923
1 x NeoPixel 5050 RGB LED with Integrated Driver Chip - 10 Pack[ID:1655] =
$4.50
1 x Adafruit Trinket - Mini Microcontroller - 5V Logic[ID:1501] = $6.95
1 x Lithium Ion Polymer Battery - 3.7v 1200mAh[ID:258] = $9.95
1 x Adafruit Micro Lipo - USB LiIon/LiPoly charger (v1) [ID:1304] = $5.95

Without a battery connected the BAT pin has no power. Not sure what you may have done to the Trinket as nothing should smoke if things are correctly connected.

Even with a USB cable connected to the trinket from PC? I had nothing else connected but one pixel and a usb cable. Nothing else was soldered other than those three points:-(. Waiting on engineers feed back from adafruit

Franklin, below see the image of the diagram I followed. https://learn.adafruit.com/kaleidoscope ... -soldering

as for the burn out. Everything was wired connected. The smoke came as soon as the IDE was uploading the script then the smoke happened

Here is the code I ran from:

Where did you connect the LiPo battery?

With The old board, shown above, I was not able to even get to the LiPo because it popped smoke as I stated a month ago. I moved on to a pro trinket, same thing happened, I even had it connected to a bread board to avoid the same occurrence. But it still popped smoke.

I have now moved on to a third board, back to a trinket. And this time I tried the “Blink Test” and I even purchased a 12 neopixel ring to attempt the goggle set up you guys have. I figured let me try one of their projects; maybe it’s me. And yet again nothing. No response from the board. The new board is from Order Confirmation No: 1702369-9584856408
New boards came in and now this is the error I am getting. SO frustrating.

avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)
avrdude: Error: Could not find USBtiny device (0x1781/0xc9f)

The reason I posted a new thread is because, as you can see. The feedback I received ended with “not sure what you may have done to the board”. I figured maybe he’s right and I just messed up the board. On my third one now, first two popped smoke doing tutorials from this site.

Third one hasn’t popped smoke, yet, but still no response.

So I am down 2 boards from before and now I have 2 new ones.

With the new boards I have purchased and attached JST connectors. But there’s no point in moving on to connecting the LiPo because the board is not responding to the IDE
