Bad Flora Battery connection?

by mkaye on Tue Oct 16, 2018 5:36 pm

I bought a flora a while ago and just had a chance to get it out to use for the first time with a halloween costume I am creating. I uploaded the arduino program no problem, and the board works when it is plugged into my computer. I believe there is a bad battery connection on the flora.

Here's what happened and my troubleshooting steps:
- When I plugged it into a battery pack (3AAA) through the JST connector, it did not work at all.
- I reinserted and replaced the batteries and also plugged and unplugged the connector several times. Nothing.
- I used a volt meter and got no voltage reading.
- I plugged the flora back into my computer with a USB cable and checked the voltage: 3.3v.
- Then, I tried connect a lithium polymer battery I had for another project-- just in case it was the battery pack. I got nothing (no voltage either).
- I then plugged the battery pack into my circuit playground on the off chance the battery pack AND the lithium battery were malfunctioning-- the battery pack worked just fine.
- My conclusion after reading your forums and completing my tests is that I have a bad battery connection on the flora.

Additional info: Order Confirmation No: 1814928-0726842391. Ordered on 7/21/18. I can post pix, but the flora board "looks" just fine!

Please advise. P.S. in the hopes that I can get a replacement quickly, I have emailed support as well. Thanks!

Are you sure the power switch is ON?

Indeed I am. I switched it on/off repeatedly throughout the process-- should have included that detail! Please note that the battery pack worked just fine with another board.

Just an added note: the flora board and neopixels are for a costume I am scheduled to wear one week from today. Your reply is much appreciated and I would love to resolve this issue asap. Thank you!!!

Can you please post a picture of the board and the connections? Have you tested the voltage directly at the connector?

Yes, I have tested the voltage directly at the connector. I will post a picture of the board as soon as I can-- anything specific you want to see? It looks just fine and in comparing the battery connector to that on my circuit playground the two look just the same. Thanks.

What was the voltage measured at the pads of the connector?

I am not certain what the "pads of the connecter" mean exactly. What I did was measure the voltage from the backside of the small black connector opposite where the battery plugs in. There are two tiny silver wires back there and when I used the multimeter, it read 4.71. I tried measuring the voltage at the ground and VBatt sites on the board, but got a zero reading. I'm now not sure if I am doing this right... please advise. I can also send pix if you need. Thanks.

That is where I measured the 4.7.

Then the connector is not the problem. Can we see the battery and its connector?

I am attaching two photos: the battery pack hooked up to the flora and the battery pack connector. I tested the battery pack, batteries, and connector by hooking it up to another board (circuit playground) and it works perfectly. thanks in advance.

OK, I can't see anything wrong there. Please contact support@adafruit.com with a link to this topic and they will help you get a replacement Flora.
