INA260 to measure battery voltage?

by bttws on Tue May 14, 2019 2:14 pm

I bought the Low Side Voltage, Current, Power Sensor with the intention to use it to measure battery voltage from a car on a Arduino. I didn't do enough research and don't know if this will still work for this. Is there a way to use it to just measure a 12volt battery level?

Sure.. connect it on the high side, and use .readBusVoltage()

I'm trying to do the same thing. I've got the INA260 hooked up like it shows in the guide, using Vcc, ground, SDA, and SCL to an Uno, and I've got the positive and negative leads of a 9V battery snap screwed into the Vin+ and Vin- terminals respectively. But when using ina260_test.ino to read the bus voltage, I get 0.00 mV or something very close to zero. My multimeter reads the battery voltage as 9.53 V. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Thanks!

That is the problem. You need to connect the negative terminal of the battery to GND.

Thanks, that fixed it!

Question:
I am testing voltage reading with a 9V battery that actually reads 3V on a multimeter.
I know zero electronics but have two other Adafruit breakout boards working with Raspberry Pis.
The wiring for VCC, GND, SCL and SDA is as usual.
Is battery + supposed to connect to VIN+?
Is battery - supposed to connect to GND on the INA260?
Are grounds on the INA260 and Pi GPIO the same?
Many thanks,
Peter

Do you get that reading when the battery is disconnected from any load? If so, it's very dead.

pwhbeck wrote:Is battery + supposed to connect to VIN+?

Yes. Then Vin- connects to the load.

pwhbeck wrote:Is battery - supposed to connect to GND on the INA260?

Yes. That completes the circuit between the battery and the load.

Yes. That gives the INA260 and the RasPi a common reference voltage from which to measure the I2C signals.

Yes, the battery is "dead", but fine for testing.
"Yes. Then Vin- connects to the load."
What is load? I am just trying to test the voltage as would be done with a multimeter.
Excuse my ignorance.

A 'load' is the circuit that takes power from a battery (or other power source).

If you don't have anything else connected between Vin- and GND, put in a 100-Ohm resistor. That will draw a little bit of current from the battery and give the INA260 something to read.

Exactly the sort of thing I don't know.
Thanks very much.

Hi,
I'm trying to measure voltage on a 12V battery which is not connected to anything else. I'm not getting any read in the serial monitor. The only thing that shows up is "Adafruit INA260 Test" and nothing else. I have the positive terminal of the battery hooked up to Vin+, Vcc on the INA260 to 5V on Arduino, GND on the INA to the negative terminal on the battery, and the SCL and SDA on the INA260 to the corresponding SCL and SDA pins on the Arduino. No other connections. Is this configuration correct?

Thanks

The Arduino ground also needs to be connected to the INA ground.

That's one of the configurations I tried, but still the only thing that showed up on the serial monitor was "Adafruit INA260 Test". For example, I don't see any "INA260 Chip found". Would there be a different reason for this?
