Not enough volume

by kazysd on Thu May 30, 2019 1:14 am

I am trying to build the talking alarm clock for my mother-in-law since she has macular degeneration. On top of that she is hard of hearing. I have it put together but the sound volume is so poor, I can barely hear it myself. Is it possible there is something wrong with it or is that as good as it gets? If so, do you have any suggestions for improving it? It sounds hard to believe (no pun intended) that the speaker volume is so poor. What's the best way to determine if everything is working ok? Earbuds seem to be loud enough, but that sure would not make this very convenient for her.

Is this the project guide you are following? ... k/overview

The Wave Shield uses a small op-amp chip to drive the speaker. It is only capable of about 1/4 watt output. You can connect a more powerful amplifier, but the speaker used in the project is only rated for up to 1 watt.

A more effective (and simpler) upgrade would be to add an external powered speaker as suggested here: ... s-list-1-3
This can be plugged into the headphone jack.
