FINGERPRINT USE FOR A SCHOOL

by natanblu on Sat Dec 07, 2019 11:13 pm

Hi,

I know the basics of coding in C and I would like to bring the adafruit fingerprint module as a method to keep track of students presence on class. My idea goes like this: I want to pass along the class the arduino controled fingerprint module, the first student will put his digital, the system is going to recognize it and then store his ID. Then, he passes to the next student, until everyone has its presence taken. At the end of the day, I would upload this list to my computer and put in an Excel sheet whom was in the class and who doesn't.

Well, I know that this fingerprint module can activate things, such as motors and lights... but I'd like to know if it is possible to register the ID's. I saw that there is a SD shield module too, that could maybe register those IDs taken, but eventough I reed all the datasheet of the fingerprint module, I still don't know how to store each ID readen.

I'll be very gratefull if someone could help me. Thanks in advance!
Natan.

The fingerprint module itself is capable of registering and detecting fingerprints. When it detects one that has been registered, it reports the ID. You can use that ID in your code to create the file for Excel and save it to the SD card.

The Feather Adalogger would be a good processor to use. It has an AARM Cortex M0 processor with a built-in SD card reader/writer.

Woww! This Feather Adalogger is exactly what I needed! I didn't know it existed. Thanks for your advice.

Just one thing I still don't understand, and I'll be very gratefull if you could explain to me is: I know the fingerprint module detects the fingerprint and reports the ID, but how do I store? Is there something like Serial.println(ID) ? I'm very new to this world and just followed some tutorials, right now I know how to make some LED's blink...

Thanks again!

You can print to a file in a similar manner to how you print to the serial port. See the logging example here:

Nice, now I get how to do to save the matched fingerprints to the SD card. I would like to know if it is possible with this feather module to register the time when the fingerprint was taken, or if I should buy one arduino and then this SD shield with built in RTC.

Edit: Now I see that I can implement this module https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-pcf ... time-clock, is it compatible to the feather M0?

Thanks again!

That RTC module can be connected to the Feather. But a more convenient configuration might be to use an M0 Basic Feather and an Adalogger Wing. The Adalogger Wing has an RTC built in and you can stack it on top of the M0 Feather for a nice compact package:

Be sure to order a st of stacking headers so you can stack them:

Hello Natan,

Any progress with your project? I have checked these guides and tutorials: Guide to Fingerprint Sensor Module with Arduino (FPM10A) on Random Nerd Tutorials and Biometric-Based Student Attendance System on Hackster (a project by Emmanuel).

I teach Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and I also want to make something similar to the biometric student attendance checker. Here's the blog post: https://blog.adafruit.com/2017/08/07/bi ... ce-system/
