MAX31865 printing all the errors.

by juliusau93 on Wed Mar 18, 2020 7:53 pm

I followed the instructions for the 3-wire PT100 RTD for the MAX31865 but it gave me errors. When I removed the board is attached and also removed it still gives me 988.79C. I thought the soldering was incomplete but it was. I do not understand what could be the reason.

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
Fault 0xFF
RTD High Threshold
RTD Low Threshold
REFIN- > 0.85 x Bias
REFIN- < 0.85 x Bias - FORCE- open
RTDIN- < 0.85 x Bias - FORCE- open
Under/Over voltage
Temperature,˚C = 988.79

There are a few suspect solder joints there. This guide has some tips on identifying and fixing common soldering problems;

The ideal joint should have a cross-section as below:

I'll cover up the gaps and see what the readings give me. I though as long as there is a connection it should be good.

Not just the gaps. The joints with too much solder are also suspect, since you can't tell if the solder has actually wetted the solder pad. A very common problem is that the pad was not heated sufficiently. So although the pad is completely covered with solder, there is still a thin layer of oxidation preventing reliable electrical contact.

And checking for continuity with a multimeter is not a meaningful test - since poking the joint with a probe just makes it temporarily more conductive.

What do you suggest I do? This is my second board and the first one had this issue also.

Those soldering problems are fixable. Please refer to this guide: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-gui ... n-problems

I got a new board and soldered it according to the instructions. It is still giving me a 900+C reading. My RTD is a PT100.

I'm looking at my board at the Rref number. Is the MAX31865 for the Pt100 supposed to say 431 or 430? I have been looking at the images provided upon buying the MAX31865 and I saw 4300 for the PT100. When I got the board it said 431.

The soldering looks excellent now. And 431 is a correct resistor code for the PT100 reference resistor.

Please post some photos showing your wiring to the processor. And also post the code that you are using.
