Arduino Mac IDE Crashes

by Benshemuel on Sat Mar 21, 2020 11:27 pm

Hi,

I plugged in a Flora and opened the Arduino IDE on my Mac (2015 MacBook running 10.15.3). The moment I opened a sketch - a small one - the IDE crashed. I updated the IDE and installed board and library updates as it prompted. The IDE continued to crash under various circumstances. I did manage to keep it alive long enough to enable the Flora in Boards Manager and select the USB port the Flora's on.

At this point, I've d/led and installed various versions of the IDE, and in the process, probably screwed up the libraries. When I now load a small test sketch and try to compile and load it onto the Flora, I immediately get this message:

Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE
fork/exec /Applications/Arduino.app/Contents/Java/hardware/tools/avr/bin/avr-g++: bad CPU type in executable
Error compiling for board Adafruit Flora.

I believe I should clean out my libraries and all vestiges of the IDE and start clean. What's the best path from here?

Thanks,
Ben

It definitely looks like something is "out of alignment". Clearing things out and doing a fresh install on all the parts is worth a try.

Thanks for confirming, Dave. Any suggestions on how to do a thorough job of that?

It's been a while since I used it on a Mac. I'd start by putting anything obvious in the trash. Then search for "arduino" and "Arduino" and delete look at deleting what you find... carefully... you don't want to delete your sketches.

Hi Dave,

I noticed that the IDE uses Java, so I d/led and installed the current Java. While the IDE doesn't immediately crash (progress...) I obviously have more to do.

When the There are updated libraries message appears and I click to review and download, I get an alert in the bottom of the Library manager: java.lang.NullPointerException. I also get all this in debug window:
Code: Select all | TOGGLE FULL SIZE

Suggestions?

Thank you,

Ugh... that's deep in the Arduino code.

What version of the IDE are you using?

While it's not updating, I just installed the latest on MacOS 10.15.3, and added multiple libraries and board support without an issue.

You cleaned off the old installations of Arduino?

I did. I not only deleted the app, I searched for "arduino" and deleted everything related that wasn't in my examples and sketches directories.

Have you looked through the Arduino forums? https://forum.arduino.cc/
