What is the purple 'thing' (see photo) attached to 1 x Fema

Hello - reading information about the Adafruit NeoPixel Digital RGB LED Strip - Black 30 LED that I have purchased. I'll be operating with an Arduino Board and I have also purchased (from Adafruit) the following:

1 x 2-pin JST SM Plug + Receptacle Cable Set[ID:2880] = $0.75
1 x 5V 2A (2000mA) switching power supply - UL Listed[ID:276] = $7.95
1 x Female DC Power adapter - 2.1mm jack to screw terminal block[ID:368] =

However, I also see something in the hookup instructions that I do not recognize (it is purple)! I've attached a photo (and circled the mystery piece) from the Adafruit website. Can you help? What is this and do I need it? Thank you for your fabulous product.

That is a capacitor to protect against power-on voltage spikes from your power supply. https://www.adafruit.com/product/1589
As recommended in the guide:
