RaspPi Serial Connection via GPIO and Level Shifter

by ChaseCrom on Tue Mar 31, 2020 6:53 pm

How can I connect to a Raspberry Pi (Zero W in my case) to serial on an Arduino (Nano) using the Pi GPIO and not a USB connection? I'm currently using USB to program and test, but I'd rather use GPIO serial since I don't have room for a USB cable in the enclosure I want to use. I know I need a Level Shifter since the Arduino is 5v and the Pi is 3.3v but I don't understand anything about how to actually wire that up. I have an Adafruit 74AHCT125 Quad Level-Shifter (3V to 5V) I can use.

Edited to add: I wouldn't be *opposed* to using I2C or some other communication protocol if it's easier or safer to use, provided that using them in Python is relatively straightforward. I am very much a software guy first.
