DS3502 digital pot question

by findly120 on Thu Jun 10, 2021 1:18 pm

We are attempting to use your ds3502 digital pot with an Arduino Nano. The motor controller we are using supplies 11.5 vdc to the high and low legs of the pot.. The specs say the pot is good for 15 vdc. Several times when we applied power to the motor controller the motor takes off at full speed for about a second then stops. At that point the the pot is ruined and the SCL i2c line is shorted to ground.. So basic question, Does the ds3502 have a default percentage setting ?? and if we don't initialize the pot setting with the command such as ds3502.setWiper(5); what will be the setting of the pot ?

It sounds like you're getting voltage spikes that are killing the DS3502.

Try putting a 10k resistor between the pot's wiper and whatever it connects to. That should at least limit the current and make it harder for a spike to damage the chip.
