I have a VS1053 and 4 short sound files of car engine noises. I want to be able to run the MP3 or wave files and either speed them up or down, alter the pitch and volume. This will ultimately be linked to the car's speed.
Does anybody have the code that I can do this?
I'm a novice with Arduino but familiar with some programming.

We do not have any example code that does that. But the VS1053 is a pretty sophisticated device and has way more advanced capabilities than can be supported in a single Arduino library.
I'd post your question over on the VLSI Solutions forums. They are the designers/manufacturers of the chip and should be able to help you out with adjusting playback speed:
