atmega8 bootloader...

by tek1229 on Mon Oct 27, 2008 7:13 pm

Just wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to modify the atmega8 bootloader to behave like the updated 168 bootloader that is shown here.. I've used and uploaded this on my 168 chips and love it.. been using up the atmega 8's but I cant stand the boot delay.. I have 1 or 2 projects that I want a semi-permanent install with occasional reflashing so I still want the bootloader, but not the 10 second delay EVERY time I boot it.. If I can change it, I will need some help compiling the hex.. Thanks!!!

there should be no delay when power is applied/removed
you can also skip the bootloader by sending it a non-'0' character
only hitting reset will cause it to wait 10 s

Ladyada, is that the operation for the Atmega8 bootloader?? I didn't think the Atmega8 bootloader had been upgraded to your changes.. Maybe I should update the bootloader right from the hex in the Arduino v12?? .. Thanks for your help... Tek

heh heh.. I know the on the 168's bootloader you have modified the boot code.. What I was asking if anyone's played with the old atmega8's bootloader to do the same thing.. I have some 168's I do play with your updated bootloaders already, just have some small projects in mind and thought it'd be good to use up these atmega8's I have.. Sorry for the confusion with my question..

ah ok, why not back-port the 168 mods to the m8?

I'm sorry ladyada, I know I'm not always the best at explaining myself, but that was what the first post was asking in the first place, or at least that was what I was trying to ask... I know the bootloaders are different, and although I am getting better at using the "arduino" language, I didn't know if I could simply paste in your modifications to a different booloader with the same success.. Not that losing an atmega8 would be a huge loss, just didn't want to spend the time re-inventing the wheel so to speak.. Not to mention that I am seriously doubting my ability to compile said c file once I do make the changes succesfully...
