Who to go to for SSL

by itcamefrommars on Fri Apr 08, 2011 1:06 pm

I've seen really wildly ranging prices from 12/year to 500/year for an SSL cert.

I did lots of network security on unix nets back in the day... but some of the ecommerce and internet security stuff is only familiar by name.
I know what SSL is... but wondering if anyone has any recommendations on a provider and offered service for a kitbiz.

Hope this isn't too stupid a question! I'm spending alot of time securing everything AMAP and building educational content before I launch, and you guys are a resource I wouldn't pass up asking!

Thanks,
Mars

Hi Mars,

http://www.startssl.com/ are based in Israel and offer free(!) basic certs and very cheap wildcard certs. Microsoft and RIM were late to the party when it came to trusting StartCom as a valid certificate authority though so you may get a few cert errors on Windows Mobile or Blackberry devices, but the price is hard to beat when you're just starting out. The certs work fine on Chrome, IE, Firefox, etc.

https://www.rapidsslonline.com/ also offers cheap certs. (Just get the standard cert if you only have one domain.) They are the cheapest VeriSign resaler I've found, and I haven't had any issues across any browser with them.

Most of the "high banned" upsells aren't too critical/worthwhile unless you're setting up your own bank or Pay-Pal competitor...

Thanks so much for the reply!
I'll check them out. Now if I can only find some good direct supliers instead of scouring ebay for large overstock lots on the cheap!

Cheers!

I just added free standard SSL certificate from gandi.net to my web-site http://nedoel.com ( I moved most of my domains from godaddy.com to gandi.net recently )
Certificate is free for 1st year of registered, transferred or renewed domain and then 12 euros ($16) for annual renewal (see https://www.gandi.net/ssl for details)
