Adafruit Motorshield v2 with unipolar stepper motor

by oneport on Thu Oct 26, 2017 4:38 am

Dear customer support,

when I'm using the Adafruit Motorshield v2 with an unipolar stepper motor with the center taps both connected to ground, does it drive the motor unipolar or bipolar? It's important for me, because if it would drive the motor bipolar the maximum current per coil would be exceeded.
I'm looking forward to an answer.

Ferdinand

With the center taps connected to ground, it is driving it as unipolar.

I don't believe that is accurate. If you disconnect the center tap, the two coils will be in series and the current will be reduced by 50%. In general, bipolar series wiring is a better choice for 6-wire motors.

Thank you very much for your help. And of course you're right with the current. My bad. ;)
