#1141 Data Logging Shield

by RickParr on Mon Nov 20, 2017 11:54 am

Hello.

I ordered the #1141 Data Logging Shield on November 8th, under order # 1588182-5809175821. Item was received in good condition except it won't read the memory card. I have provided a couple of pictures but I'm not sure if they will be of any use. We would like to receive a replacement please.

Have you tried using the memory card in another device to make sure it's OK? What sketch are you using to try and read the card?

We are sure the card is working properly as it has been used with other sketches. Unfortunately, I'm not sure which sketch they are using for this application until tomorrow. Is this enough information to move forward?

Hello.

Here is the response from the individual using the shield.

Yes, in a previous version Adafruit Data Logger Shield. Also same card reads fine in two different windows laptops. I originally tried card with same sketch as previous version card. Then tried with “CardInfo” sketch provided as example with library. Get “no card present” error.

Please respond and advise.

Thanks Rick

Can you post a photo showing the soldering job on the bottom of the shield. Also, what main board is the shield being used on?

This is the board we are using and attached is a picture of the back of the shield.

You need to either solder on the 2x3 ICSP header or solder the jumpers labeled MOSI, MISO, SCK.

Shouldn't we be getting a refund? You are sending out faulty shields and having the customer correct the problem by making them do the soldering? This makes no sense to me. Please advise as to why you are recommending we fix the faulty shield versus getting a refund?

I'm not sure the shield is faulty at this point. Nothing is being fixed. It just hasn't been completely setup. The need to solder is indicated on the product page:
You'll need some basic soldering skills to put it together

and the associated guide covers the details:

I have it working now. I missed the step regarding the ICSP connector. The previous version shield is used with an older Arduino without the ICSP, so I must have added the jumpers as suggested. Maybe this could be added to the instruction. I see now that the jumper note is printed on the board near this location. I can't see the older board where it is installed, but I must have added these jumpers.

Thanks for your help.

Sorry for the confusion, glad you got it working. The requirement for the 2x3 headers for the updated version is mentioned in the guide:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-dat ... he-headers
But it is only once sentence, so can be easily overlooked. Esp. if you were familiar with the older model.

Will this work with an Arduino Duemilanove ATMEGA328P?

@ecooper That's close enough to an UNO that it will proably work. If you have any further questions, please start a new thread.
