Hello.

I am also new, and I have a question.

How do I use the available pins? I'm guessing I don't solder the headers in the pins I want to use?

Also, what does broken out mean in here:
The analog pins (analog 0-5 also known as digital pins 14-19) are broken out in the bottom right corner.
Thanks!

One way to use the available pins is to build the shield with stackiing headers.
what does broken out mean
There are holes with solder-pads for all of the analog pins in one corner of the board.
These are arranged next to power and ground pads to make it easy to attach 3-pin sensors.

Thanks for your response. So you just solder in those instead of the male header pins.

Do you know of what local stores (US) sell these stacking headers (I'm assuming I have to pay for shipping on those headers you linked to?)?

EDIT: What other alternative ways are there to use the available pins without headers? (if any)
Thanks again. :)

Those may be hard to source locally - unless you are lucky enough to live near a big supplier. I doubt that Radio Shack would carry them.

The alternative is to solder to the tops of the male header strips.

Digital pins 9 and 10 are used by the motorshield to control the servo pins, right? I'm using the motorshield to control two steppers and no servos, but need access to digital 9,10...can I access them at the servo pins of the motor shield?

Yes. Pins 9 & 10 are available on the innermost pins of the servo headers.
