FeatherWing Music Maker

by superpanda on Fri Jun 08, 2018 5:05 pm

I just received 3 of these boards with the built-in amp. Having trouble getting audio out, while communication with the VS1053 seems fine I noted that on all 3 boards the amp IC is too hot to touch just sitting idle. Is that correct??? Any known defects with these boards?

To test the board I am sending the sine test command documented in the datasheet section 9.12.1.

No audio output

So any feedback on the excessive heat from the amp?

Turns out there is playback, just such low volume I could not hear it initially! Volume setting at max. I hesitate to increase gain because of the default heat I am seeing and I am using the sine test output. I tried playing a variety of mp3's as well and the volume output is so low. Using 4 and 8ohm speakers. No perceivable difference. I purchased these from DigiKey so who knows how old they are.

Again, all 3 of the boards did this and 1 of them is no longer working and 1 has issues with the right channel (dead).

Is anything connected when the amp IC is hot? Could you post clear photos of your soldering (if any) and connections?

Hey there,
I have the same problem. I just stacked the Feather Wing on the Feather m0 wifi and the amp turns to hot to touch, even if I just use the blink example without any music or something.
I hope you have a solution for that problem. Mayby my featherwing is just defective?

In my experience, nothing had to be connected to the speaker output for the IC to heat up. I have since harvested the VS1053 IC's off the boards and created my own version of the PCB with the MAX9744. All seems to work fine now.

@clsiel Just to make sure we're talking about the same chip - can you circle or indicate somehow which one is getting hot?

It looks like you've only soldered on one terminal block. But there is solder in the other terminal block position as well. Where did that come from?

did the chip or speaker outputs get shorted by chance? its kinda odd because we've had very few issues with the amp featherwing!

So I just tried a different music maker with a different feather wifi m0. Same problem here.
I just soldered the pins nothing else. As soon as the feather is connectet to a power source the amp gets way to hot.

thats wierd, both acting the same? worth asking, does audio come out?

can you take a clear shot of the chip straight-on so we can see markings/datecode?

Yes, there is sound. I connectet a conductive speaker but the sound was way to low. I could barely hear it.
We need the music maker for a university research project, so I really need to fix that problem.
I hope the pictures are good enought.
And thanks for your answers =)

Hi,
I belong to the same institution/project as clsiel.
As requested, I sent a Mail to the support with the original invoice. Now I was asked to get an authorization for all three boards instead of just one.
Could you please authorize the replacement of all three boards, since every board has the same error?

Best Regards
Vanessa
