You want to use the 'continuity' setting in the upper left part of the dial. It is the one with the musical note symbol.

If you touch the two probes together, you should get a beep. That verifies that you are using the correct setting and the meter is working properly.
Then if you touch the pairs of circles as indicated on the photo above, you should also hear a beep for each pair.

Got it right. Beeped both times.

OK. So the i2c pins are connected as they should be.

Now double check that you have close to 3v between the GND pin and frame of the battery holder.
And run i2c scanner and post the results. https://playground.arduino.cc/Main/I2cScanner

I'm not getting ~3.3 volts between ground and the battery case. When I run the scanner, this is all I got:

I2C Scanner
Scanning...

Nothing else.

That is a problem. The chip needs a battery connected for stable operation.

Make sure your meter is set for the 20v range. (9:00 position on the dial)
Pull the battery out and measure the voltage between the top and bottom of the cell. It should be in the 2.9v-3v range.

I had the wrong setting. I got 3.22 volts between GROUND and the battery case and 3.01 volts on the battery.

Hmmm. Running out of ideas here. Let me check with some of the other engineers.

BTW, as you know the current shield is a replacement for another 1141 that had a similar problem. I ran the same tests on it and got the same results from the scanner and the GND -> battery check.

This is the one that I've been using since you suggested that I start using a second Arduino. Th first one was not an R3.

looks good to me, and you shorted both solder jumpers on the bottom of the shield?

Yes. I sent you two photos the other day; one was of the bottom and it shows the two shorted jumpers.

dont know what it is then, your board should works - it doesnt make sense to replace it anymore. we can refund it and you can find some other solution. im 99% sure its not the PCBs because 2 not working is extremely unlikely and we sell *a lot* of these shields. but what it is we dont know

I would want to buy another one anyway. Are there any other dataloggers that yo sell? I have an older one of yours that uses a 1307 and it works well.

nope we've moved away from the 1307 - this is the only RTC we use!
