Need help with WAVE Shield

Post by harryp »

I am having terrible trouble with the Wave Shield. I have one that I assembled last year that works with no problems. I bought 3 this year and I can't get any of them to work. I am using the same SD card and same Arduino UNO with both the working and non-working shields, so it must be something with the shields themselves. I have been as careful as I can with the soldering and don't see any obvious problems. The one thing that gives me pause is that the instructions for inserting the op-amp (IC3) say to match the notch with the silkscreen. There is no notch. I inserted it with the circle on top of the chip matching the photo (the same way I did it on the working shield last year). When I try to run the PISpeakHC sketch, I get the following output:

Pi speaker
Error: Card init. failed!
SD I/O error: 1, 0

This is too expensive for me to continue. Is there any hope of debugging my problem?

You are missing the signal jumpers. See the last step of the assembly in the tutorial.

Thanks! Is my face red. I printed out the instructions and missed the last page. No wonder it didn't work.

It's a common mistake. Everyone seems to miss that step.
