music maker

by bradfors on Sun May 24, 2020 3:46 pm

Hello I just purchased two musicmakers from digikey one amplified and the other not. I have the amplified version working fine but the un-amplified version comes back with the error:

Adafruit VS1053 Simple Test
Couldn't find VS1053, do you have the right pins defined?

I used the same arduino, sd card and sketch that I did on the working one so it must be defective.

How do I return it for an exchange?

Did you make the code changes mentioned here needed for using the shield vs. the breakout to define the correct pins?

Yes, as I said I used the same sketch, sd card with the same sound file and arduino board as the working one. I uploaded the sketch one right after the other. The amp one works fine.
Thanks

Can you post another photo of the top side that's more at an angle so we can double check the soldering. From the straight down view, it looks generally OK, but maybe some indication of cold solder on a few pins?

Just to confirm for you that I am using this line in the sketch replacing the original:

Adafruit_VS1053_FilePlayer musicPlayer =
// create breakout-example object!
//Adafruit_VS1053_FilePlayer(BREAKOUT_RESET, BREAKOUT_CS, BREAKOUT_DCS, DREQ, CARDCS);
// create shield-example object!
Adafruit_VS1053_FilePlayer(SHIELD_RESET, SHIELD_CS, SHIELD_DCS, DREQ, CARDCS);

Thanks

Thanks for the additional photos.

Would you be willing to edit your library code to uncomment these two lines:
https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_VS ... 3.cpp#L130
It might be helpful to see what is actually being returned there in terms of the version number.

The library code should be here: [your sketch folder]/libraries/Adafruit_VS1053_Library/Adafruit_VS1053.cpp

I'm concerned this could still be a soldering issue. It's still hard to tell for sure from the photos. The responses in the output are essentially all the same value, so it's not something intermittent or marginal. Does it look like any of your pins show the "insufficient wetting" as shown here?

OK, let's try a replacement and see what happens.

Send an email to support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread and your order number and they can send you a replacement Music Maker Shield.

Not sure, but when you email support you can ask them that. They'll be able to answer that.
