Use Music Maker shield with rfm69hcw breakout?

by larrymanire on Mon Jun 01, 2020 1:02 pm

I want to use the rfm69hcw radio to request an SD file to be played by the Music Maker shield on Arduino Uno. I understand they both use SPI. Am I going to have conflicts. Is there a way to avoid them?

As long as they both "play nice" on the SPI bus, you should be fine. I know the music maker does, because I've used it for a couple projects that have shared the bus with SD drives and displays. Well, come to think of it, if it didn't play nice it couldn't use the SD drive to play music at all. Don't know about the rfm69hcw though. Never used one of them.

Hey Jim - Can you elaborate more on the play nice? It seems there's a way to bring down the radio on the LORA and RFM69 feathers by pulling pin 8 down. Can something like that be done to turn off the music maker wing?

Sorry, don't check back here all that often.

What I mean by play nice is that they behave properly when not using the SPI bus. When its select signal is not active, the device needs to let go of the bus lines so other devices can use it.

If the music maker wing acts anything like its breakout counterpart, it should be fine. Its the driver library code in your host processor that's controlling its select signal. As far as I can recall, it only grabs the SPI bus when "you" tell it to, by activating its select signal using its driver library. Other times its just sitting there passively listening.

The SD card behaves the same way. As should your hardware.
