Ultimate GPS with USB - Works on Windows not in Debian

by d_sas on Mon Jul 06, 2020 2:51 pm

I'm trying to get an ultimate GPS with USB working in a debian 6.0.6 (running kernel 2.6.32). When I connect the unit up to my laptop USB (running windows 10) I can see the NMEA sentences in a terminal program (Putty or Teraterm). When I connect to the USB port on the Debian box, I can see the USB device populate in dmesg as shown below, but the output doesn't appear when I "cat /dev/ttyUSB1" .

On the board, I can see the tx and rx LEDs flashing when I run the cat/dev/ttyUSB1 command so I think the board is communicating at some level but I don't see any readable sentences. I've got two separate Ultimate GPS boards and both are behaving the same. I'm guessing it's a driver issue, but the cp210x.ko and usbserial drivers are both loaded in debian.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot?

Output of dmesg:
[ 1068.468724] usb 3-2: new full speed USB device using ohci_hcd and address 4
[ 1068.699881] usb 3-2: New USB device found, idVendor=10c4, idProduct=ea60

Have you tried connecting with screen instead?

I have unfortunately screen doesn't appear to be a valid command on this system:

root@hostname:/dev#screen /dev/ttyUSB1
-bash: screen: command not found

You could try installing it with apt. tmux is also something people use, but I've never tried it out.
