good battery for ultimate GPS

I've successfully built a system using this device with a Teensy 4.0. It is hand soldered to a board on which the other components are reflow-soldered. I want to redo it to add the battery for remembering present position. It would be nice if it was tiny and its holder or even better the battery itself was capable of being reflow soldered.

If you have one of these things and did the battery, what did you do? Other than the obvious caveats about heating batteries, it does appear that lion batteries are made which can be reflow soldered. Does anyone here have any experience with this?

Hi jferguson,

Coming up with a battery solution for the Teensy is not a straight forward process. I would either use the onboard USB for power or switch to another processor. However, we do have a post that gets into all the hackery you could consider to get a JST port or add-on charger board.

I think a cleaner solution would be to use the Ultimate GPS FeatherWing, plug it into your favorite Feather M4 Express and use a LiPoly pack which can connect the M4 Express JST connector.

There is a Teensy 3.x to Featherwing converter that has the JST power connector, but I don't know that it supports Teensy 4.x. If it did that is probably the route you want to go.

I see so this battery is just to hold the RTC data.

I would avoid soldering Li cells directly.

Since there is a VBAT input pin you can make use of that with an exernal coincell holder.

VBAT is an input pin - it is connected to the GPS real time clock battery backup. We suggest using the battery spot on the back but if you have a project with a coin cell or other kind of battery that you want to use (and its under 3.3V) you can connect it to the VBAT pin. For V1 and V2 modules: If you do this, be sure to cut the trace on the back between the RTC solder pads

That is pretty cool. I've never seen SMD form factor batteries like that.
