POWERBOOST SHIELD 500 -DEFECTIVE

by mourac on Fri Nov 13, 2020 12:43 pm

Hi Adafruit Tech Support,

I believe I have a defective shield. I think its the charge controller chip that has failed.

Order #: 2404065 - 9251231289
Received Date: 11 / 12 / 2020

Notable Behavior:
1. When plugged, switch off, no battery connected - the CHG light illuminates
2. When plugged, switch on, no battery connected - the CHG light illuminates
3. When plugged, switch on, battery or no battery - zero output voltage
4. When plugged, switch on, battery connected - zero output voltage, zero voltage across the battery terminals on the board
5. With battery or USB connected - zero voltage across the terminals of the switch

I left it plugged in overnight to charge the 2000 mA lithium battery - woke up and its CHG light was still illuminated.

Thanks. That looks generally OK. Not sure. Let's replace it. When you get the replacement, try the battery charge before soldering anything to the shield. The switch is optional, so you can test basic functionality without it soldered on.

Send an email to support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread and your order number and they can send you a replacement PowerBoost shield.

Ok, thank you. Are these shields known to be vulnerable to failure due to high heat? Do they have a soldering temperature and duration recommendation?

Thanks,
Corey

What do you consider high heat? They should be fine for general soldering iron type soldering - like for the header pins and enable switch. If duration were an issue, there would other evidence, like burn marks on the PCB.
