Motor Hat with Nema 17HS19-2004S1

by nexus1423 on Thu Jan 07, 2021 1:59 pm

Hi,
I'm trying to run a Nema 17HS19-2004S1 (12V 2A) Stepper with a Raspberry PI and the Adafruit Motor Hat (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2348)

I read in the specification that the Hat could drive 1,2 A per channel at 12V, so I tough that a 2A Stepper should work fine. When running the test code in this tutorial (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-dc- ... i/overview) the FET gets damn hot, the Motor doesn't move and the power supply is hitting the current limitation.... I think I have already burned one channel....
So is there any way the get more power over the FET (Stacking TB6612 Bridges for example?) and get my motors run? I need the torque from this type of Steppers for my project.

greets

I read in the specification that the Hat could drive 1,2 A per channel at 12V, so I tough that a 2A Stepper should work fine.

2A is substantially more than 1.2A, so no. 2A would seriously overload the HAT. But 2A is just the maximum rating for the motor. Without current limiting, the actual current draw will depend on the supply voltage. Since the phase resistance is only 1.4 Ohms, the peak current draw with a 12v supply would be about 8.6A. That would seriously overload both the motor and the HAT.

Based on the specifications, that motor appears to be intended for use with a current-limiting "chopper" type driver. Since the HAT does not have current limiting, that motor is not compatible. https://learn.adafruit.com/all-about-st ... 1460534-10

We have the DRV8833 which does have current limiting. https://www.adafruit.com/product/3297
You can also check www.pololu.com. They carry a much wider range of stepper drivers.
