Power when Stacking Motor Shields

by PurpleMagician on Wed Jan 13, 2021 11:37 am

I am using two Motor Shields (V2) and am a little confused as to supplying power to the motors (the Arduino will have a separate power supply). Do I wire a power source to the terminal blocks of both shields or are they connected somehow? If they are not connected can I use the same battery pack for both?

Also, would it be possible to apply 6v to one shield and 12v to the other shield using two different battery packs?

Thanks for the help!

If you are powering the motors separate from the Arduiono, you need to remove the VIN jumpers from both shields and connect your power supply to the external power terminal blocks on both shields.

When disconnected from VIN, the motor power circuits are isolated from each other as well, so can use separate battery packs if needed. But there should be no problem using the same battery pack for both.
