Powerboost 500

by fjr0215 on Sun Jan 31, 2021 1:47 pm

Hello,

I purchased a Powerboost 500 Shield just before Christmas and the 2000maH battery recommended/linked from the PowerBoost page. When I plugged in any usb charger, the charging light would come on, but it would never go off. I cut the wires on the battery and tied in some open leads so I could measure the voltage across the battery. When unplugged from the powerboost, the battery measured 3.9V. Whenever plugged in, it would go to zero. The powerboost shield wasn't plugged in to anything else. No other LED's illuminated on the board. Yesterday, I soldered on the switch to see if things changed. Everything noted above stayed the same. Do you think that the board could be defective? Below is my order number:
2408383-8688211206

Thank you,
Frank

Can you post a photo of your setup so we can see what all you did with the battery wiring alterations.

Here is the battery lead modification I mentioned. The brown wires are just open-ended - where I measured the voltage across the battery. So the original connector is still getting a connection to the battery, with red and black wires. I twisted together and soldered the wires inside the wire nuts.

It would have been better to measure the battery voltage from test points on the shield:

instead of modifying the battery like that.

Is that your only LiPo?

Yes. It is my only one. It seems fine when I use it to directly power a resistive load or a small dc motor. It maintained voltage while providing current.

Hello, do you agree with my thoughts that the battery is fine if it can supply current to a dc motor without voltage dropping out? I would think that the board would normally draw less current from it by quite a bit. If so, I'd be interested in a replacement board. Are you open to that route, or what would you suggest as a next step? Thank you for your assistance.

It sounds like the battery is still functional at least.

If you protect those test leads that were spliced in to make sure nothing gets accidentally shorted and plug the battery into the shield, with nothing else attached to the shield, and make sure the enable switch is turned ON - What is the current state of the LEDs on the shield?

Only the charge light comes on.

It's a little confusing the sequence of things here. And may be something else happening. But let's send you a replacement shield and see what happens. Do not initially do anything with those spliced in leads - like try and measure battery voltage. Just use the shield per normal and make sure the general LED indicator behavior is as expected.

Send an email to support@adafruit.com with a link to this thread and your order number and they can send you a replacement PowerBoost 500 Shield.
