Louder Sound

by nathanbush on Thu Apr 15, 2021 2:37 pm

Hi all, I am new to the forum and have a question about the wave shield. I have it set up and working but the sound is too low for my use. I have a set of two 4-ohm car speakers https://speakershunter.com/car-speaker-sizes/ and I wired them in series to make 8 ohms, but the sound is too low. I need to find a way to make them louder. Is there any guidance available?

Several things there:

The max output of the wave shield is about 1/4 watt. That is not a lot of audio power. It is suitable for headphones or fairly close-up listening with a small speaker. For more power you are better off with an external power amp, or a set of amplified speakers: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1363

Doubling the impedance cuts the power in half - to about 1/8 watt. You will probably get more sound out of just a single 4-ohm speaker.

And a bare speaker is quite inefficient, since some of the sound from the back cancels out the sound from the front. A proper enclosure will give you more sound than the same speaker without an enclosure.

Thank you so much for your quick response. I appreciate it & yes I'll check about the power amps later today.
