Adafruit 16-channel PWM/Servo Shield with Mega

by jglogau on Thu Apr 29, 2021 9:37 am

I just got an Adafruit 16-channel PWM - B, soldered it up and connected the USB to my Mega (Not a regular Uno or clone) and hooked power (5V 2A) to the PWM/Shield.

I am NOT getting both the red and green lights turned on, ONLY the green LED. So the servo isn't running with the demo code "servo". I assume that the red and green lights are referring to LEDs on the Shield, not the Mega.

What am I doing wrong?

Is the wiring somewhat different for the Mega?

Here's a picture, is the soldering OK, can't get it any higher resolution?

Your solder joints have not flowed onto the solder pads. You will need to re-work those a bit. Make sure to heat the solder pad as well as the header pin so that the solder flows to cover the pad. The cross section should look like the diagram below.

This guide has some tips on identifying and fixing common soldering problems: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-gui ... n-problems

Yup, that did the trick. Didn't know there were so many ways to incorrectly solder a pin.

The how to avoid typical soldering mistakes was an eye opener.

Got two servos happily spinning away.

Any suggestions on what soldering tip to use on a PCB?

Thank you

For most through-hole type PCB work I like to use a small conical or 'screwdriver' shaped tip such as this one: https://www.adafruit.com/product/1250
