1.8" Color TFT Shield Not Functioning

Post by rcomyn »

I cannot get this shield to function with my Arduino Uno. When I try the “graphicstest” sketch, the screen remains blank. I attached a picture of the display so you could evaluate my soldering.

Incidentally, I also soldered the P1770 2.8” TFT LCD breakout I purchased and it works fine with the same Arduino Uno.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

My first step is always to retouch the soldering. In the majority of cases, that'll take care of it. Overall it looks good from what I can see, but a few may look "blobby" which often means a poor connection.

I tried re-soldering each pin and still no luck.

From the troubleshooting page for that shield:
The display driver circuit needs a small amount of time to be ready after initial power. If your code tries to write to the display too soon, it may not be ready. It will work on reset since that typically does not cycle power.
Have you tried resetting after powering up?

Both libraries are are installed and up to date as per https://learn.adafruit.com/1-8-tft-disp ... cs-library?

The display cable on this board is soldered to the board under the display so there's no easy way to check or repair it. Sometimes pressing gently on the display at the cable end will "fix" it. By that I mean it will confirm that it's a display connection issue. Give that a try if you like.

Thanks for indulging me.

Please email [email protected] with a link to this thread, your order number, and request the replacement of one 1.8" Color TFT Shield w/microSD and Joystick - v 2.

I received my replacement board. This time, when I power it on, the screen flashes on and then off. When I download the graphicstest, nothing displays until I press (and hold) the Reset button and then the screen lights up and appears to be running the graphicstest. As soon as I let go of the button, the screen goes dark. I re-touched all the solder joints. Same result.

I would like to propose the following: I would like to return both boards to you at my expense and you could evaluate the situation. Does this seem fair?

Thanks,
Bob

Have you had a chance to think about my idea in my previous post?

Can you post clear photos of the soldering on the headers?

Overall it doesn't look horrible, but I see a few that might be marginal, I'd go over them again, looking to improve them. See https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-gui ... -soldering and https://learn.adafruit.com/collins-lab-soldering for tips.

I'm so happy that overall you found my soldering "not horrible". :) I followed your recommendations and re-touched my soldering on both boards and got no improvement.

I want to say that I have soldered many, many boards and have not had any problems except with these two. The Adafruit boards I have soldered recently include:
240x320 2.2" TFT
Motor Shield v2
Motor Shield v2 - stackable
Servo Shield
5x8 NeoPixel Shield for Arduino
ATWINC 1500 Wifi Breakout - I soldered the headers on this board today.

I personally would like to know what the problem is with these two boards. Wouldn't you? I would like to suggest again that I send the boards back to you at my expense if you could get someone to look at them and determine what the problems are.

Thank you,
Bob

You should email [email protected] about that.

I want to say as a counter that I've been soldering for almost 40 years and I still occasionally have to retouch my work.

I get your counter. I've been soldering for almost 60 years (and I wear a magnifying headset when I solder that I bought in 1973 for fine railroad modeling work). It's just really weird that the only problems I can remember are with these two boards. I'm really curious as to what the problems are. At any rate, I emailed support as you suggested.
