MotorShield V2 did i get wrong motor?

Post by furprincess »

Hello ADA!!
I purchased a V2 motorshield and Arduino uno and bought 2 steppers from another supplier. I hooked up my Usongshine 3.6 volt, 1.5 amp, 2.4 ohms phase resistance stepper with power from the shield using the jumper. I ran the stepper test arduino sketch and motor, shield, and arduino are getting HOT. after reading more about the specs for compatible steppers for shield I think I bought incompatible stepper motors. could anyone confirm my suspicions.

thanks

It sounds like you are correct. To quote the shield FAQ:
What stepper motors can I used with the shield?
The TB6612B driver chip are simple H-bridge drivers with a 1.2A continuous current limit. There is no active current limiting, so you need to choose a stepper motor that will not try to pull more than that. For a detailed explanation, see this guide

A simple rule of thumb is to use a motor with a phase resistance of 10 ohms or more. This will be safe to use with supply voltages up to 12v.
Your motors want 1.5A and has a phase resistance of only 2.4 ohms.
