GPS Shield - troubleshooting "can't write" message

by sys_spud on Sun Aug 31, 2008 11:05 pm

First of all, thanks go to Lady Ada for all of her great work on the various shields and projects (especially the thorough instructions).

See Serial Monitor results below. Under either arduino 10 or 11 I'm getting the same results with the GPS sketches, both the CSV and the regular logging sketch. I keep getting the message "can't write" (to the SD card). Having trouble parsing the code, but this looks like a buffer error. I have changed the RAM_BUFFER_SIZE to 32 in wiring_serial.c. I am getting files written to the SD card, but they are all zero byte sized.

Anyone have any tips on how to troubleshoot this problem? I'm stumped.

TIA,
sys_spud

If by "classic logger" you mean the other sketch in the download section for GPS Logger, yes. I tried the sketch labeled "GPS basic logging sketch" and the one linked as "GPS CSV logging sketch".

Got the same result in each case - "can't write".

Just a thought - could this be in any way related to a mistake in soldering the SD socket?

It doesn't make sense that files can be created but with zero bytes, like it only has some of the SD functionality, but not full functionality.

Yes! It was the card, strangely enough....Worked fine with Kingston 2GB on GPS Logger CSV sketch.

Out of five SD cards, here are my results:
Kingston 2GB - works
Lexar 2GB - gets "can't write" message
SanDisk Ultra II 2GB - gets "can't write" message
SanDisk 512MB - gets "can't init" message
PQI 2GB - gets "can't init filesys" message

Results were reproducible for all cards repeatedly.
