SoftwareSerial vs AF_SoftwareSerial

by boinx on Tue Sep 09, 2008 4:04 am

any reason not to use the SoftwareSerial in the 011 Arduino dist? i tried both with the GPS shield and they both seem to work, the AF one is much larger in size once compiled so id like to know if there is some problem with the non-AF version...

they both act pretty similar as long as its under 9600 baud. the AF soft serial uses an interrupt so in some situation it will not 'drop' characters whereas the default softserial only reads characters when the read() procedure is called
use whichever youd like!

actually, after some more testing, i found there is a big difference between the two. the arduino one doesnt work! it drops characters even at 4800 baud.

only use quality AF_ products kids! accept no substitutes.
