Power Over Ethernet for XPort Direct + Ethernet Shield v1.0

Post by white_eskimo »

Hi there,

Is Power Over Ethernet possible for the XPort Direct attached to the Ethernet Shield v1.0? If not, is it something that could be possibly built into future versions of the Ethernet Shield?

Also, if it is possible and hasn't yet been implemented, it would be great to build up support from the community!

Thanks,

Justin

PoE is currently pretty expensive. A little web searching shows that Silver Telecom has some useful looking modules that cost under $10... http://www.silvertel.com/

TI's similar modules are over $30 :-(

A lot of the current PoE stuff is aimed at relatively high-end stuff - the switches that provide power, or expensive "powered devices" like IP phones. Even the modules above are for 10W or so. The low end powered device market is being sorta ignored (commodity devices; not enough chance for juicy profits!)

@westfw,

Thanks for your reply. You bring up a good point. Still though, there are lots of PoE modules available for <$20. Check out this one I found for $10 http://www.confero24.com/a/product_info ... ucts_id=96. If you buy in bulk, you can get the price to drop substantially.

I don't think that $10-$20 is out of most project's price range.
