Can't get my XBees communicating again

when I move the SENDER away from the Laptop, and power it with an external source, it no longer transmits.
What are you using for an external power source? Did you move the power selection jumper on the Boarduino from "usb" to "ext"?

Just to let you know that I have the PIR system working with the Boarduino powered by a 9V battery. The previously-tried 5V mains supply evidently wasn't enough to power transmission.

It doesn't seem to matter whether Serial or XBSerial is used - although presumably mixing them in the same sketch can get them confused?

Not sure how that is possible. Hardware Serial talks on pins 0 & 1. The SoftwareSerial port you have defined for the XBee talks on pins 2 & 3.
