Idea to improve accuracy of Ice Tube Clock Kit

by bcesary on Mon Mar 29, 2010 10:52 am

Hello Adafruit, Mrs. Limor, and all users.

I would like to share an idea to improve accuracy of the Ice Tube Clock. It is a software mod that can be useful, since I've experimented with other platforms with success. :)

Introduction: Clocks that work with external crystals can cause delay deviations that make clock get late, something about 2 minutes/month as described in the Ice Tube Clock Kit documentation, but can vary.
A compensation factor can be added in software to correct time at intervals defined by user. So user can run clock for some days to inspect how the clock gets late, comparing it to a more reliable clock.

Goal: To build a new entry in menu to set a compensation factor. This factor needs to be used by the main software to add 1 second after XX hours, defined by user.
For example: Menu > Set Comp > 34 h
This will add 1 second every 34 hours, to compensate regular delays.

Since I am NOT an assembly programmer, I want to ask your help, encouraging who liked the idea and can modify the latest firmware.

I appreciate any contribution!
Regards

You can find firmware with drift correction here: http://wiki.github.com/jsgf/iceclock/drift-correction

Actually, fat16lib wrote it too - that's who I copied it from. :)

Thank you for the replies. Now I'm going to start studying how to change the clock firmware.
I know I will need at least a cable and a software environment in PC, but if someone could post me a "getting started" link or some other info I thanks in advance.
Regards!

Hey, by the way, do not need to post here all the step by step instructions, only a link where I can find instructions for dummies will be nice. :D . Thanks!

For software, see here: http://www.ladyada.net/learn/avr/ There are instructions for installing the software tools for different operating systems.

To load firmware onto the Ice Tube you'll need a USBtinyISP.

Here are some tips on flashing the Ice Tube firmware: viewtopic.php?f=41&t=13310
