I installed the DS3231 on my new RPi 3B+ that came with Raspbian Buster and followed the instructions at https://learn.adafruit.com/adding-a-rea ... t-rtc-time.
Using the Jessie routine when I run "sudo systemctl disable fake-hwclock" I get "unit /etc/systemd/system/fake-hwclock.service is masked, ignoring".
Using the Wheezy routine when I run "echo ds1307 0x68 > /sys/class/i2c-adapter/i2c-0/new_device" I get "bash: echo: write error: Invalid argument".
Has anyone tested this with Buster?

Re: Setup DS3231 on RPi and Raspbian Buster
I've used that guide to setup a couple of DS3231's, and even with that ignoring message it worked for me in Buster.
I've used it with some Pimoroni RV3208's with no issues also. It's my go to guide for setting up a RTC.
