PCF8523 Error in dmesg

I am unable to use the RTC PFC8523. i am getting the following in the dmesg:

Using 5 volt for VCC.

Try switching to 3V for VCC. The Pi is a 3V board.

I get the same thing on 3 volt, but i will try again and see. Also, if this is only a 3 volt item then you need to change the description.

It's not 3V only. But you need to match power to your board's logic level. From link above.
This chip can be powered by 3-5VDC so there is now on-board regulator. To power the board, give it the same power as the logic level of your microcontroller - e.g. for a 5V micro like Arduino, use 5V
In your case, it's 3.3V.

Ahh gotcha. I have it on 3.3v pin and i am not showing ID #68 in my i2cdetect output:

I have confirmed the voltage on the rtc and it matches whats coming out of the pi. Could i have hosed it when connecting to 5v??

Attaching to 5V would not have damaged the PCF. You risk damaging the Pi's pin though, since VCC sets the voltage level.

Do you have another I2C device and/or another Pi? (or even something like an Arduino board)

Ah, I think I missed this. Doing the same on both. Hmmm. Not sure. It should show up with the I2C scan. Even without a battery installed.
