All segments lit—no other function

Finally built the kit I ordered in 2011 and it doesn't exactly work. All segments are lit. Beeps on startup; menu button does nothing.

The all-segments-lit problem is usually due to a flaky Q3. The jumper test can confirm that Q3 is the cause in your clock. Adafruit will likely offer to replace Q3 with a better part (the ZVP2110A), assuming Q3 is the culprit.

I've now tried the Q3 jumper with no change—all segments still lit and unchanging.

Any other ideas? I've added pics of my board.

Don't see any obvious issues there. Can you post one of the solder-side of the tube board also?

Tube board. (I checked for continuity between the points just left of 12 o'clock and there is no short—only potential problem I could see.)

Looking at your board, I see one microcontroller pin that looks unsoldered, but that could just be the light. This pin is used in sending the display information to the VFD driver chip, so a bad connection there might explain your display issues.

Thank you—the missed solder point was the problem. This is the first circuit board I've ever put together and I thought I was obsessively checking everything. And I was looking at it all again when it wasn't working, but somehow I just didn't see that missed pin. Thank you again, the clock now works without the Q3 jumper.

Awesome! And congrats on your now working clock.

I've seen many experienced builders make (and miss) similar soldering issues, so don't feel too bad. It's all part of the process. :-)

Nice catch jarchie! Lighting can make that sort of thing tricky to spot.
