Larger Tip for Large Heat Inserts Moderators: adafruit_support_bill, adafruit

Hello All,

I recently made the Adafruit heat insert rig, and I purchased the "Adjustable 60W Pen-Style Soldering Iron - 120VAC USA Plug - BEST 102C" as the soldering iron. It works great for small heat inserts, but I tend to do larger heat inserts (for instance 1/4"-20 heat inserts) and the included tip is too small to do these very well.

Does anyone know if there are larger-diameter replacement tips for this soldering iron that would work for my application? On most of the tips I see on Adafruit, I cannot find the dimension of the largest part of the cone so I do not know which would be best.

Hello,

1/4"-20 is a standard SAE thread type. It is a little larger than 5mm

The M5 tip may work fairly well, then.

I ordered it and just got it. I can't actually seem to find a way to connect the new tip to the soldering iron?

What iron do you have? Note, on the insert tip page:

Then you're good to go:

Best of all, you can use this iron with Hakko tips.

Unscrew the nut near the base of the heating element, slide the sleeve off and replace the tip by carefully pulling it off the heating element. Reverse the process with the new tip.

When I do that, the nut cannot get all the way back to the threads due to the tip getting stuck on the sleeve. I will send a short video shortly

You can see in this video what I mean. The large tip obstructs the sleeve and nut from reaching the threads, it seems that it is not compatible
