Does the up button work at all? If you press and hold, does it go into temperature setting mode?

Hello

The UP button does function while being used in the set temp mode and the adjustment mode
The UP button does not function in the preset mode as defined in the manual under section 5. OPERATION

Hello Adafruit,

Since the iron functions and we can set the temp, my Boss requested that we keep it and not send the iron back.
The next one you send out please check that the preset works. We plan to order more.

Thanks

Hakko has a 90 day warranty. You might want to contact them directly. https://www.hakkousa.com/warranty-policy/

It has been a long time since this has been posted, however this is a top result for the Google query "FX-888D preset mode doesn't work." (I'm actually surprised the Adafruit people who replied weren't familiar with this!) Hopefully this post will help other people who are searching for this info.

By default, the Preset Mode is not enabled. In essence, you can think of the unit as having two distinct modes of operation: Manual temperature control mode, and Preset mode. There are a series of steps that can be followed to change the mode of operation between each of these. (Unfortunately, they cannot both be active at the same time. The full user manual is helpful for this, and many other technical details. With no longer than it is, it really SHOULD be included with the soldering station, but at least the quick-start guide does point you to their website. This is the current link to it (or check out https://doc.hakko.com if it's no longer correct by the time you read this.)
https://doc.hakko.com/download.php?_gs= ... 88d&d=4089

To enable Preset Mode:
1. Hold down the [^UP] button while turning device on. The display will initially display 3.00, the begin flashing '01'.
2. Press the up arrow twice. The display will now be flashing '11'.
3. Press enter. The display will probably be flashing '0'. Press the up arrow until it is flashing '1'.
4. Press enter. The display will now probably be flashing '5P'. This specifies the number of presets you want to be available. You can leave it on the default, or specify a different number. If you want to program your own custom preset temperatures later, it could be useful to only display the presets you have actually programmed. For now, I'd just leave it on 5 [5P].
5. Press enter. The display will return to flashing '11'.
6. Hold enter for 2 seconds to save your settings. The display will display 'y' or 'n'.
7. Select 'y' (for yes) if to save them and resume normal operation.

This setting is persistent, so the FX-888D will remain in preset mode until you disable it.
If you decide you'd like to disable it, just follow these same steps, except in step 3, select '0' before pressing enter.

I do recommend giving the manual a good read. You'll learn a lot more (very useful) things about the device's operation, including other parameters, exploded diagrams, troubleshooting, etc. You know, normal user manual things.
