Through-hole soldering iron tips - suggestions?

by BruceBufford on Thu Dec 29, 2016 2:16 pm

I have a very nice Weller soldering workstation -- a WESD51. It came with a pointed tip. I'm looking to get a chisel tip for through-hole soldering. What size of tip(s) should I be looking for? I looked at Weller's compatible tips for my iron, and there are a plethora of sizes to choose from. I honestly have no idea where to begin, but I've been told my pointed tip isn't the best for transferring heat.

And since I'll be putting in an order with DigiKey, which other tips should I get if I'm doing mostly through-hole & small wire-to-wire type soldering? Might as well grab a bunch at once to save on shipping.

Thanks in advance!

My WESD51s are normally set up with the "ETA" 1.6mm screwdriver tip. Occasionally I'll find a need for one of the narrower conical tips like the ETS. I also have one of the chunkier screwdriver tips (ETD I think). But I don't find much need for it.
