the rise and fall of sugru (Wired UK)

Post by plutonic »

FYI. http://www.wired.co.uk/article/the-rise ... l-of-sugru

Kind of a sad story: Sugru (https://www.adafruit.com/product/437) sounds like cool stuff. I never bought any because it's pretty expensive and you have to use it quickly before it dries out, but I did think of some possible uses for it.

They ended up having to sell the company to a big adhesives manufacturer for much less than they had hoped. Hacker News is full of similar comments to mine: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17292710

Adafruit still has it in stock. I wonder if it will stay available from the new company.

That is a shame. Sugru ranks up there with duct tape and super glue as essential shop supplies. I hope Tesa continues to develop the product. (improving the shelf-life would be a plus).

It was an interesting product, but felt a bit over-priced, so I never got into it more than playing with it a few times.

From linked article>> “The marketing material was clearly inadequate and did not highlight the risks and threats especially with the bank funding. Sugru should have advised us months ago.”

Back in my day, it wasn't legal to have a zillion "unqualified investors" (as defined by the SEC). And the Blue Sky Statement made it clear that it was all "pure rectal extraction"; as long as you weren't out there using language designed to defraud people, everyone understood that private offerings were inherently exceedingly high-risk, and you shouldn't be putting money in you can't afford to lose. This crowd-funding thing is a two-edged sword.
