Multimeter problem

by seph on Wed Jun 02, 2010 2:03 pm

I ordered a Multimeter (MAS830) from adafruit a few weeks ago. I just tried it out and don't get any reading, just zero's when I try to read any DC voltage. I contacted adafruit for support and they said to post here for troubleshooting. It has been a long time since I have used a multimeter, so I may be doing something wrong.

Can anyone give me any ideas on how to test to see if my meter is dead?

Thanks.

The black probe goes to GND, the red one to 'voltage' (or current, but not yet). Turn the rotary dial to DC voltage (something like 20V if available) and measure something (AA battery, 9V cell ...).

If you're on AC you can't measure DC (reads 0 or strange values) and vice versa.

NEVER leave the red probe plugged into the current socket. Next time you think you're measuring voltage, you'll short something out. I don't know if this one is properly fused, so it might fry in that case.

Thanks. I swear I tried that, but I must have had something backwards.
