Help with Hakko FX-888D

Post by mrhydea4 »

I recently bought one of these units and some SAC305 RoHS lead-free solder. At what temp should the Hakko be set to work? I tried various levels - 600, 650, 700, 750 - but it really only works if I jack it all the way up to 899. How can I tell if the tip is accurately getting to the right temp?

Lead-free takes a little practice to get used to. But it should work with a tip temperature in the 700-750F range. Make sure that the tip is securely attached. A loose tip will not conduct heat well. Hakko does make a tip thermometer for <$20. I believe the model is FG-100.
