Hot Air Soldering Rework Station Fan turns off

by jcarlisle on Tue Jun 14, 2016 10:40 am

We ordered a hot-air rework station in April and it has begun acting a bit finicky. After about a minute of use, the the fan turns off and airflow stops. We have tried various combination of returning the nozzle to its stand, power cycling the station, but nothing seems to make it consistently functional. It appears to arbitrarily alternate between a functioning and non-functioning state.

It sounds like the thermal cutoff is kicking in. What temperature setting are you using, and which tip?

Most recent settings are 275°C using the largest tip.
If that was the case, why would the fan shut off? Shouldn't it stay on to cool the station?

We didn't write the firmware, and I can't answer for the people who did. That combination of temperature and airflow isn't likely to overheat anything though.

Try unplugging the unit and letting it sit without power over a weekend. We've seen a small number of those units get stuck with what seems to be an incorrect register setting or something. Disconnecting power long enough to make everything settle back to initial-power-up state seems to solve the problem.

Hadn't used it in over a month. Turned it back on today, and it displayed the same symptoms. What next?

I ordered the Hot Air Soldering Rework Station w/ Three Nozzles - Quick 957D on September 3rd 2016. On the 29th of September 2016 the rework station stopped blowing altogether and it seamed that it wasn't heating up either.

Try disconnecting power for a couple of days.

There seem to be times when bad information gets written to the internal memory. Disconnecting power long enough to dissipate any stored charge usually lets the machine start in its default state again.

I have decided that I will be shipping the product back. I cannot have equipment that has the ability to choose when to work and when not to work. If that was the case nothing over here would get done.

I still have the original box that it came in so I will be packing it up today.
