GPS: no fix for Adafruit fona SIM5320E

by Appu on Wed Jul 12, 2017 3:30 am

Hi,
Kindly help me to solve the following issues:
I recently brought an Adafruit fona SIM5320E module, I'm able to send the message from this module, but when I'm trying to obtain the GPS information it is showing "no fix". I just connected fona to my laptop and using XCTU for getting the NMEA information.

These are the steps that I followed (as given in this link: https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-fon ... connection)
1) Connected the GPS module to laptop using USB
2) Using XCTU to open the serial AT port
3) configured and opened the port :
AT
OK
AT+CGPS=1
AT+CGPSINFO

4) Meanwhile I opened the NMEA port also to get the data:
These are the results that I'm getting:
$GPRMC,,V,,,,,,,,,,N*53
$GPGSA,A,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,*1E
$GPGSV,4,1,16,32,,,,24,,,,29,,,,05,,,*72
$GPGSV,4,2,16,18,,,,22,,,,04,,,,11,,,*75
$GPGSV,4,3,16,17,,,,03,,,,12,,,,30,,,*7C
$GPGSV,4,4,16,01,,,,23,,,,15,,,,27,,,*7F
$GPGGA,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,*66
$GPVTG,,T,,M,,N,,K,N*2C
$GPRMC,,V,,,,,,,,,,N*53
$GPGSA,A,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,*1E
$GPGSV,4,1,16,32,,,,24,,,,29,,,,05,,,*72
$GPGSV,4,2,16,18,,,,22,,,,04,,,,11,,,*75
$GPGSV,4,3,16,17,,,,03,,,,12,,,,30,,,*7C
$GPGSV,4,4,16,01,,,,23,,,,15,,,,27,,,*7F
$GPGGA,,,,,,0,,,,,,,,*66
$GPVTG,,T,,M,,N,,K,N*2C
$GPRMC,,V,,,,,,,,,,N*53
$GPGSA,A,1,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,*1E

I'm using active GPS antenna: https://www.thingbits.net/products/gps- ... -meter-sma
Also soldered the bias.

PS: I also interconnected Adafruit fona and Raspberry pi 3.
connections:
fona GND > RPi gnd
fona vio > 3.3 V
fona Rx > RPi Tx
fona Tx > RPi Rx
Fona GND > Fona Key

installed the gpsd but sudo cgps -s is giving me : n/a and status :"no fix" later GPS timeout.

Please help me to fix the above issues.

That's really odd. GPGSV says that you have 16 satellites in view, but there is no elevation, azimuth, or SNR listed for any of them. Also, I'm not sure you can actually see 16 satellites at any time.

Where are you located? Are you inside or outside? Are you surrounded by tall buildings or a lot of trees?

Initially I tried inside the building but later I placed the external active antenna open to sky, and worked near the window. Yes I'm surrounded by tall buildings.

Meanwhile I'm trying to get the device location using GSM cell towers,for that latitude and longitude information of towers is required. But I didn't find an AT command for that for sim5320e. I tried with at + cpsi , it is giving me only some information like MCC, MNC.
It will great if you can share the details.

The Adafruit library doesn't support it, but the chip does. See Section 17.22 (page 512) of the datasheet

AT+CASSISTLOC=?
+CASSISTLOC: (0-2),(1-16),

(language),(1-24*60*60)

OK
AT+CASSISTLOC=1
OK

+CASSISTLOC:17.597393,78.126512,140717,193119

+CASSISTLOC: 0

I guess this gave me the latitude, longitude , date and time

But some problem happened after using the following commands, I checked the format and in next command I changed that to 1. After the change I tried AT+CASSISTLOC but it returns +cassisloc:4

AT+CASSISTLOCFORMAT?
+CASSISTLOCFORMAT: 2

OK
AT+CASSISTLOCFORMAT=1
OK
AT+CASSISTLOC=1
OK

+CASSISTLOC: 4
AT+CASSISTLOCFORMAT?
+CASSISTLOCFORMAT: 1

OK
AT+CASSISTLOCFORMAT=2
OK
AT+CASSISTLOC=1
OK

+CASSISTLOC: 4

so again I changed the format but not worked. So I turned off my module and started it again but giving the same result +cassistloc:4

AT+CASSISTLOC=?

+CASSISTLOC: (0-2),(1-16),(language),(1-24*60*60)

OK
AT+CASSISTLOC=1

OK

+CASSISTLOC: 4
AT+CASSISTLOCFORMAT?

+CASSISTLOCFORMAT: 2

OK

+STIN: 25
AT+CASSISTLOC=1
OK
+CASSISTLOC: 4

I'm not getting what happened suddenly, I got the lat/long information immediately after turning on the module.

I believe this indicates a network error:
+CASSISTLOC: 4

The chip tries to access google and fails, apparently. Don't know why. Check your network status

Yeah, I think you need GPRS.

You can check the network status with
AT+CREG?

0 = "Not registered"
1 = "Registered (home)"
2 = "Not registered (searching)"
3 = "Denied"
4 = "Unknown"
5 = "Registered roaming"

Yes I had tried AT + CREG it returned 5 for me.
But yesterday I din turn on GPRS, but I got this value ,
AT+CASSISTLOC=?
+CASSISTLOC: (0-2),(1-16),

(language),(1-24*60*60)

OK
AT+CASSISTLOC=1
OK

+CASSISTLOC:17.597393,78.126512,140717,193119

+CASSISTLOC: 0

After that it started returning +CASSISTLOC: 4

Could you please let me know the steps for turning on GPRS. I want to confirm that if I'm doing it in the right way.

Still getting a network error return code.

Try this:
